His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him

HM King Mohammed VI was born on Wednesday August 21, 1963 (1st Rabi II 1383 AH) in Rabat. At the age of four, late HM Hassan II enrolled him in the Koranic school at the Royal Palace.

On June 28, 1973, HM King Mohammed VI successfully obtained the primary school certificate and continued his secondary studies at the Royal College, where he obtained his baccalaureate in 1981.

In 1985, HM King Mohammed VI obtained his law degree from the Faculty of Legal, Economic and Social Sciences in Rabat. The subject of his dissertation was "The Arab-African Union and the Kingdom of Morocco's international relations strategy".

In 1987, he obtained his first Certificate of Advanced Studies (C.E.S.) in political science with honors.

In July 1988, His Majesty King Mohammed VI was awarded a doctorate in public law with honors.

To complete his training and gain first-hand experience of the principles and rules of law he had learned at university, he spent several months in Brussels in November 1988, working directly with Jacques Delors, then president of the Commission of the European Communities.

On October 29, 1993, he was awarded a Doctorate in Law from the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis, with honors and congratulations from the jury, for his doctoral thesis on "EEC-Maghreb cooperation".

On December 22, 1979, HM King Mohammed VI was appointed Honorary President of the Socio-Cultural Association of the Mediterranean Basin.

On March 18, 1982, the late HM Hassan II appointed him Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the IX Mediterranean Games in Casablanca.

On April 11, 1985, HM King Mohammed VI was appointed by the late HM Hassan II, Coordinator of the Offices and Services of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, a task worthy of a prince who has successfully carried out the various responsibilities and missions entrusted to him.

On July 12, 1994, HM King Mohammed VI was promoted to the rank of Major General.

Since 1996, president of the Royal Moroccan Saddle Horse Association (ARMCS) and honorary president of the "TAFILELT" association. The Sovereign has been president of the "Rabat Oudayas Surf Club" (OSCR) since 1999.

Experienced in heavy tasks from a young age, HM King Mohammed VI, then Crown Prince, was often entrusted by his late father with numerous missions at national, Arab, Islamic, African and international levels, with brotherly and friendly Heads of State. He took part in several international and regional conferences.

His first official mission abroad dates back to April 6, 1974, when he represented the late HM Hassan II at the Religious Office celebrated at "Notre Dame de Paris" cathedral in memory of French president Georges Pompidou.

Becoming King of Morocco on July 23, 1999, following the death of HM Hassan II. The ceremony for the presentation of allegiance took place in the Throne Room of the Royal Palace in Rabat.

On July 30, 1999, His Majesty King Mohammed VI issued instructions for the Throne Day to be celebrated on July 30 each year, and addressed His first throne speech to the nation, in which the sovereign pledged to continue the work of his father, the late HM Hassan II, and to give particular priority to solving certain social problems.

HM King Mohammed VI is Supreme Commander and Chief of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR).

His first foreign trip since his enthronement was from December 25 to 28, 1999, when HM King Mohammed VI visited the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State of the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Tunisia.

On July 12, 2002, marriage of HM King Mohammed VI to HRH Princess Lalla Salma.

On May 8, 2003, the Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol and Chancellery announced the happy news of the birth of HRH Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, whom the Sovereign has decided to name after his August Grandfather, the late His Majesty Hassan II, may God rest his soul.

His Majesty King Mohammed VI was awarded several decorations and prizes:

  • The Trophy of the International Association for Non-Violent Sport (IANVS), September 11, 1983;
  • The grand cordon of the Republic of Tunisia, August 1987;
  • Gold medals awarded by the French-English sports magazine "Champion d'Afrique" for 1988-1989;
  • "For Granada 1999" prize awarded by the group of radio stations of the "SER" channel in Granada, December 1999;
  • The Hussein Ibn Ali necklace (Jordan), March 2000;
  • The grand cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, April 2000;
  • The grand cordon of National Merit (Mauritania), April 2000;
  • The grand collar of the Order of November 7 (Tunisia), May 2000;
  • The grand cordon of the Malian national insignia, June 14, 2000;
  • The "Helen Keller" Foundation Award for social work, particularly in the fight against blindness, July 17, 2000;
  • Honorary doctorate from George Washington University, June 22, 2000;
  • The collar of the Order of Isabella La Católica (Spain), September 18, 2000;
  • The Abderrahmane 1 prize, awarded by Almunecar Town Hall (60 KM east of Granada). Traditionally awarded to personalities who have made a significant contribution to strengthening relations between the Arab world and Europe, November 27, 2000;
  • The "ISESCO Emblem", the highest distinction awarded by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to heads of member states, December 7, 2000;
  • Wissam "Oumaya" Al Watani of the Order of the Great Wichail (Syria), April 9, 2001;
  • The Lebanese Wissam of Exceptional Merit, June 13, 2001;
  • The Grand Cordon of Abu Bakr Seddiq, the highest distinction of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross organization, in recognition of the role played by the Sovereign in the field of humanitarian and charitable action and his solidarity with the underprivileged, June 29, 2001;
  • Grand collar Al-Khalifia (Bahrain), July 28, 2001;
  • Presidential shield awarded by the Arab Labor Organization (ALO) in recognition of the Sovereign's efforts in the fields of economic development and the promotion of joint Arab action, April 19, 2002;
  • The Golden Order of merit of African Handball, awarded by the African Handball Federation (CAHB), April 22, 2002;
  • The emblem of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), April 29, 2002;
  • "Moubarak Al Kabir" Wissam, presented by the Kuwaiti Head of State, HH Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, October 22, 2002;

  • On October 5, 2004, King Albert II of Belgium awarded HM King Mohammed VI the Grand Cross of Leopold Wissam;
  • On November 23, 2004, the Mediterranean Organization of Travel Journalists and Writers (OMJET) awarded HM King Mohammed VI the Olivier Tourism and Peace Grand Prix for 2004;
  • On November 24 2004, the International Federation of Travel Journalists and Writers (FIJET) and the Arab Federation of Travel Journalists and Writers (FAJET) awarded HM King Mohammed VI the "Crest" of the two Federations;
  • On November 26, 2004, HM King Mohammed VI, on an official visit to Brazil, was decorated in Brasilia by President Lula da Silva with the "Cruzeiro do Sul" medal, the highest distinction awarded in Brazil to heads of State and illustrious foreign personalities;
  • On November 30, 2004, HM King Mohammed VI, on an official visit to Peru, was decorated in Lima by Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sun of Peru, the highest Peruvian distinction awarded to a foreign dignitary;
  • On December 1, 2004, HM King Mohammed VI, on an official visit to Peru, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor of the Order of the Grand Cross by the President of the Peruvian Congress (Parliament);
  • On December 3, 2004, HM King Mohammed VI was decorated by Chilean President Ricardo Lagos Escobar at the Moneda Palace in Santiago, Chile, with the "Bernardo O'Higgin" collar, the most prestigious distinction awarded to heads of State and illustrious foreign personalities;
  • On February 11, 2005, HM the King was decorated by President of the United Mexican States, Mr. Vicente Fox Quesada, with the Grand collar of the Mexican Order of the Azteca Eagle, one of the prestigious decorations awarded to heads of State and high personalities in Mexico;
  • On March 1, 2005, HM King Mohammed VI was decorated by Burkina Faso's President Blaise Compaoré with the Grand Cross of the Burkina Faso Order, the highest distinction awarded by Burkina Faso to a head of State;
  • On March 19, 2005, HM King Mohammed VI was elected "Francophone Economic Man of the Year" by the Forum Francophone des Affaires (FFA), in recognition of the vast social project embodied in the many reforms initiated by the Sovereign in Morocco;
  • On November 28, 2005, HM the King was decorated by His Imperial Majesty Akihito, Emperor of Japan, with the Collar of the Supreme Order of the "Chrysanthemum" and the Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the "Chrysanthemum";
  • On February 20, 2006, HM King Mohammed VI was decorated by Gambian president Yahia Jammeh with the insignia of Grand Commander of the Republic of Gambia;
  • On February 22, 2006, HM King Mohammed VI was awarded the Grand Cross of Congo National Order of Merit by Congolese president Denis Sassou Nguesso;
  • On February 28, 2006, HM the King was decorated by president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Joseph Kabila, with the Grand Cordon of the National Order "National Heroes", the DRC's highest honor;
  • On April 21, 2006, Special Olympics International awarded the top-ranking "Special Olympics International" shield to HM King Mohammed VI as a sign of gratitude and recognition for the Sovereign's efforts in the social field and for the disabled;
  • On May 3, 2006, HM King Mohammed VI received ISESCO's Golden shield for dialogue among civilizations, the Organization's highest distinction, in recognition of the Sovereign's efforts to strengthen dialogue, coexistence and understanding between peoples;
  • On December 13, 2006, His Majesty King Mohammed VI was awarded the Al Moubarak Al Kabir necklace by the Emir of the State of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah;
  • On May 15, 2007, HM the King was awarded the Order of the Three Stars, the highest distinction of the Republic of Latvia, by president of Latvia, Mrs. Vaira Vike-Freiberga;
  • On May 18, 2007, HM King Mohammed VI received the King Abdelaziz Collar from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, HM King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz;
  • On April 12, 2009, HM King Mohammed VI was awarded the 2009 World Peace Prize by the Washington-based Arab Community Center (ACC). This prize was awarded to the Sovereign for "His initiatives aimed at consolidating peace in the world, the Sovereign being the Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, as well as for His efforts in protecting sacred values and strengthening peace, freedom and democracy in the Maghreb region", according to the center’s chairman Mr. Oussama El Sharabassi;
  • On April 17, 2009, HM King Mohammed VI was awarded the Grand Collar of the Order of Independence, Equatorial Guinea's highest distinction, by Equatorial Guinean president Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo at the presidential palace in Bata;
  • On October 28, 2009, the Arab Women Investors Union presented the Union's shield to HM King Mohammed VI; This shield was presented to HRH Princess Lalla Hasna during the opening ceremony of the International Conference of Arab Women Investors, in tribute to the Sovereign's action in favor of the promotion of women's rights;
  • On November 19, 2009, the Amadeus Institute awarded the 2009 Medays Prize for the environment and sustainable development to HM King Mohammed VI, in recognition of the Sovereign's personal commitment to responsible development.
